Ritual #1: DIET – You literally ARE what you eat. A daily diet of unprocessed raw, steamed, roasted or blended whole foods rich in vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids is a MUST for healthy skin. Dairy and processed sugar are the first foods to let go if you’re dealing with any sort of skin congestion, acne, psoriasis or skin imbalance.
Ritual #2: EXERCISE – Sweat is actually good for your skin! It moisturizes and supports waste removal. Daily cardiovascular exercise will give you increased energy, move the body’s garbage collectors, the lymph, and support a more radiant complexion. So embrace the sweat!
Ritual #3: SLEEP – A good night’s restful sleep is imperative for healthy skin.
Ritual #4: SUNSHINE – 10-20 minutes of daily unprotected sun exposure is essential to good health. Besides providing vitamin D, sunlight also helps with eczema, psoriasis, acne and other skin imbalances. After 20 minutes, use a mineral sunscreen that helps shield you from both UVA and UVB rays, like non-nano zinc oxide. Even so, there’s much controversy lately over the effectiveness of sunscreens. The best way to avoid sun damage (aka wrinkles and skin cancer) is to use common sense with regard to sun exposure, such as wearing a hat and protective clothing, avoiding peak sun and following the rest of these skin care rituals!
Ritual #5: WATER – What goes in must come out. Drinking 8-12 eight ounce glasses of water daily will help eliminate harmful toxins from your body. Congested skin and rashes can be the result of toxic buildup inside. Insufficient water intake is also the leading cause of dry skin, so drink up!
Ritual #6: CLEANSE – Skin needs to breathe, especially while you’re sleeping when your body excretes toxins. If skin is clogged with make-up, sebum and grime, breakouts can occur. Use our gentle nourishing cleansers daily with warm water (never hot) followed by cool splashes. Do NOT over cleanse oily skin which can cause even more sebum production. Twice a day is sufficient.
Ritual #7: TONE or MIST – This step removes any residual soap or cleanser, refines the pores, and restores the natural protective pH balance of your skin. Do this after cleansing and before you apply your serums and/or moisturizer. Also use mists to re-hydrate your skin throughout the day. (toners with alcohol are a no-no.)
Ritual #8: MOISTURIZE and NOURISH – Apply an appropriate moisturizer and /or serum every day. Even oily skin can benefit from a light moisturizer. It protects your skin from dehydration and environmental stressors, improves elasticity, increases smoothness and softness as well as feels wonderful! Serums provide nourishing actives that are easily absorbable and are applied before your moisturizer.
Ritual #9: EXFOLIATE – A gentle mechanical scrub performed one to four times a week will keep pores free of dead skin cells and debris. Add enough water, aloe juice, or herb tea to our Fresh Start Polish to form a paste and gently massage it into your skin, then rinse well. The use of chemical exfoliants like with alpha and beta hydroxy acids can really revitalize your complexion and keep it clear of congestions which can lead to breakouts. Cosmetic grade earthen clays will draw out toxins and excess oils while salt or sugar polishes give an excellent all-over body exfoliation. Do not use abrasive mechanical scrubs on acne, rosacea, or super sensitive skin. Dry skin brushing with a natural bristle bath brush or natural fiber wash cloth is a wonderful daily practice and does wonders for your body, inside and out!
Ritual #10: DE-STRESS – Stress causes our bodies to become unbalanced and unhealthy. So make time to unwind, laugh and connect with friends and quiet time with yourself. Slow down. Sit down. Snooze. Step away. Sometimes…simply do nothing!
